American Language Program Lecturers Teach a Seminar on English Medium Instruction in Mexico

ALP Lecturers Christopher W. Collins and Brittany Ober traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico in early January to conduct a seminar for professors who teach in English at Universidad Panamericana. The seminar focused on the facilitation of successful English Medium Instruction (EMI), which occurs when instructors teach their subject matter in English to students who have a different first language. Topics in the seminar included Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Critical and Creative Thinking, Vocabulary, Intercultural Communication, and Project-Based Learning, among others.

The 44 professors who attended the course teach in various subjects at the university, including law, engineering, history, marketing, business, innovation and design, digital journalism, and English as a foreign language. The content teachers and the English language teachers from the university had the opportunity to exchange their views and ideas in activities that fostered collaboration and discussion.

The attendees of the seminar ended the week by presenting a lesson plan that they wrote or adapted to include concepts, strategies and techniques that were discussed and practiced in the seminar, and many of the professors indicated they would use these lesson plans in the upcoming semester.
